Tale of Two Deserts - October 2021 Show at Tumalo Art Co

The desert is a fascinating place.  Both harsh and filled with beauty, the deserts of Central Oregon and Southern Utah have much to offer if you know where to look.   A recent road trip to the red rock deserts of Southern Utah combined with living in the high desert of Central Oregon is what inspired artist Dee McBrien-Lee to create her most recent series.   Deeply in love with Southern Utah and Central Oregon,  McBrien-Lee and her husband had considered settling in the St George, Utah area prior to their discovery of Bend in 2007.  Lifestyle, culture and many other factors figured into their decision to make a permanent move to Bend after living in Park City and having a second home outside St. George for 4+ years.

“Red Rock country has fascinated me ever since our honeymoon when we rented a houseboat on Lake Powell, just the two of us, for 10 days.  It was truly magical and I told myself if we ever found a place to live that looked like that, we would be home.  When we discovered St. George, I was convinced that would be where we would retire.  Then we found Bend and here we are.”

Whenever possible this artist heads back to red rock country. Most recently she spent the month of April in Southern Utah where she was inspired to paint almost every day. “The morning we left Bend for Utah we had a beautiful sunrise which seemed like a sign of a good trip to come.  We travel through Burns on to Winnemucca and  over to the Great Basin Highway with the final leg of the trip down through Snow Canyon and into Ivins, Utah. Throughout the drive there are many amazing vistas and forever skies. I have looked at these landscapes for years thinking that I would one day record them on canvas.  As we approach the end of the drive we go through Snow Canyon which always gives me a feeling I cannot describe. It is purely spiritual. We have arrived."

"Spring in the desert is amazing. We hiked almost every day.  Cactus flowers bloomed everywhere, the river was still flowing in the canyon and owls and coyote were having their young.  Rainbows, waterfalls and petroglyphs were everywhere. There was always something special to see.  Our return to Bend in May was a perfect ending to the trip. Flowers were starting to bloom and we had a special treat of a week of rain. Central Oregon and Southern Utah are at once similar and very different and I was full to bursting with inspiration."

"Tale of Two Deserts"  includes paintings of locations from Southern Utah and the deserts of Oregon plus views from the passenger seat on the long drive from here to there and back again.  McBrien-Lee interprets her surroundings with bold color, movement and a tendency  toward the abstract.

New for 2021

As we moved into a new year I wanted to make a shift in my work and in order to do this I decided to use a very large roll of canvas ( 6’x10’), and without intention attack it with color and collage. Once I had some ground work I planned to create smaller pieces from the places my imagination took me when observing the larger canvas. Progress is in order of completion below. It has been such fun I will definitely do it again.

Vertical Interlude - September 2020 show at Tumalo Art Co in Bend, OR

My restless spirit

I define myself as a restless creative. My creativity takes me in many directions but most often I am driven by my current passions, or my drive to reflect on the current state of our society. The heart of my more recent work has centered on creating abstract art. This has resulted in expressions of color and light on canvas reflecting my interpretation of women’s spirit and femininity as well as a general freedom of expression.

2020 brought about a new restlessness that I have worked through in my latest series. I wanted to set aside everything that has been going on around us and find focus in the everyday gifts we experience. To reach a broader audience I decided to work in a more relatable style but not to completely abandon my abstract leanings. With this thought in mind, I chose to look for patterns in nature. Inspired by the simplicity and meditative quality of vertical line, I made this my focus for “Vertical Interlude”. It is my hope that the new work will bring joy and possibly even comfort to the viewer.

Please join me on Friday September 4th from 4-7PM at Tumalo Art Company for my opening of this soon to be released series of works.

Moving On

After 9 years as Partner/Artist at the Red Chair Gallery in downtown Bend, Oregon it is time for a change. As of December 31st I am no longer associated with the Gallery in any capacity. It has been a wonderful journey with this outstanding group of artists and I have grown by leaps and bounds both creatively and professionally through this association I wish all the wonderful people of the Red Chair all the very best in all their future endeavors.

That said, I continue to work on my own personal and creative development and continue to be represented by the Earthworks Gallery in Yachats, Oregon and the TClifton Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee. I am looking for additional opportunities in the Central Oregon area and beyond and will update this blog with further developments as they arise. I will continue to update this website and my Facebook page, Lonesome Dog Studio with new works so be sure to follow my page or check this website periodically for news.

Thanks for all the support that I have received over these 9 years and to quote the famous cartoon character Buzz Lightyear, “To Infinity…and beyond!”

Commissioned Piece

I have been having the most fun creating this commissioned work for my clients. It is 60”X 48” and the largest I have done to date. It just fits into the car! Animal Dreams, Acrylic & Mixed Media on Canvas

High Desert Art League

New year, new opportunities.  I have been accepted into the High Desert Art League, a professional Central Oregon Artists organization that promotes local artists through exposure in a variety of shows throughout the year.  Some of these shows are in our own backyard and occasionally we are showing outside of the area.  In May of this year HDAL will have a group show in Beaverton, Oregon outside of Portland at Art on Broadway.  We have a theme of Dans le Jardin and I am working on the piece now, will post the finished product soon!

International Society of Acrylic Painters

I am so excited!  My piece, "My Body, My Choice" has been juried into the ISAP Annual Online show which I believe begins in December and runs through Spring 2017. Out of close to 300 entries, 69 were chosen. Will post details when the show is up.

Starbutts

It is hard to believe but the Holidays are upon us.  When I am totally uninspired to paint, this is a great time to do something different.  These are some of the new ornaments that will be in the Red Chair Gallery beginning Thanksgiving.  We are closed Thanksgiving day, but come on in for Small Business Saturday and see these cuties in person!

Neutrals

Started working on this new piece today, am really loving working with the neutral colors.  This may call for a series!

Also, my 2017 calendars are available, all birds printed on thick card stock, 11"X14" size pages.  With shipping they are $27 when ordered from my website.  Please contact me if you are interested.  Many of the paintings can be found on the "For The Birds" page and some that are included are Hallelujah Chicken, Circus Chicken, Crow and many more.

New website title

OK, I have finally decided on a new domain, it is dmcbrienart.com.  Keep it simple, right?  I have no idea what I am doing so bear with me if you have interest in looking at this blog. I will figure it out when I have time to devote.  In the meantime, I have at the very least uploaded much of my work for anyone to view.  Happy painting!
